Tip #3 Thickening Shampoos ~~ To create an illusion of fullness avoid over-texturizing or layering, which thins out the ends, says Bekim Benjamin Osmani, creative director and co-owner of Salon Gaboa USA in Clearwater FL. Try not to shampoo daily . . . Every other day, use a dry shampoo, like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray. Also, you can use Nioxin Diamax Thickening Treatment, which claims to significantly increase the diameter of existing hair strands.
Tip #4 Use Volumizing Products ~~ To encourage volume and help it hold all day, layer in volumizing products, suggests Lynn Jacobs, a stylist at Up in Tangles in Cypress, TX. “For maximum, volume when blow drying, use a round brush and lift hair straight up as you dry.”
Tip #5 Use Visual Deception ~~ Adding texture creates style support and volume . . . Or at least the illusion of it. Try coloring or highlighting your hair or use a curling wand to add instant texture and movement. Tip #6 Skip the Brush ~~ To add bounce, skip the brush, which flattens hair, and style with the pads of your fingers, says Jet Rhys, owner of Jet Rhys in San Diego, CA. Start with damp hair and add a Volumizer (try Phyto Phytovolume Actif Volumier Spray at the roots. “Set your dryer on high and massage your scalp clockwise all around. This expands the cuticle and boosts volume. Next, pop in a few large hot rollers on top layers only . . . They add movement, while keeping your look modern, not matronly.”
Tip #7 Use a Volumizing Powder ~~ Volumizing powders that go to the roots “salt shaker” style are the newest way to get a boost of volume. Naz Kupelian, who owns a namesake salon in Boston, created Naz Kupelian Poudre, which becomes colorless once it’s on the hair. To use it, apply mousse (try Naz Kupelian Foaming Sea Salt mousse, which is salt-based to swell the cuticle) and blow-dry, then flat-iron hair. Finally, lightly tap the Poudre shaker all around the crown area and fluff out your locks.
Tip #8 Don’t Forget Conditioning ~~ Many women with fine hair don’t use conditioner because it “weighs down” hair or makes the cuticle too compact and flat, but this is a big mistake! Over time, hair becomes dry, dull and brittle. Always use conditioner, putting it on the ends only if you’re afraid to inhibit lift, says Osmani.
Tip #9 Choosing Products ~~ Fine flat hair is a tricky problem to deal with. You want to find hair care products that will thicken the strands or give it more volume, but at the same time you do not want to go for formulas that are too harsh as they can cause fine flat hair to become limper.
It is recommended that you take the middle path, therefore, to ensure that you are striking the iron on both. Or, you can invest in products specifically created for fine flat hair. There are tons of them and you only have to do some digging to uncover them. But you do not have to because I have outlined all of the things you need to know about choosing the right product as well as a guide on which products to look for.
Tip #10 Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner ~~ Fine flat hair does not need conditioners, because it can weigh the hair down further. However, if you were to use a conditioner make sure to go for ones formulated to fortify your scalp and strands so that it promotes growth of new hair and reinforce follicles so you are less likely to suffer from more breakage. Stay away from creamy shampoos. The best choices for fine flat hair are clear shampoos.
Tip #11 Volumising Spray ~~ This product can put fine flat hair to the rescue! However, be extra careful when you spritz this volumising spray to ensure that only the sides are applied and not the top of the hair. The product should be sprayed on damp hair. Refrain from using a blow dryer later, but instead wait for hair to air dry because the latter gives more volume to hair than when it is dried straight from shower using heated air.
